There’s A Lot Going on the Weekend of August 7, Including the Car Show and the Dublin Irish Festival.

This coming weekend there are a lot of interesting things going on in the Plain City area. Plan your time accordingly.

First off, is the 8th Annual Plain City Classic Car Cruise-In presented by Bob Chapman Ford and the Uptown Plain City Organization. The car show will be on Saturday, August 7 from 11 am to 5 pm. The registration fee is $10 and you can either register by printing out the form on the web site listed below and bringing that to the event (if it is already filled out, this will help speed up the registration process) or at the registration desk between 11 am to 2 pm the day of the show. There will be more than 60 awards, as well as dash plaques to the first 200 registrants, goody bags to the first 100 registrants, t-shirts, raffles, kids activities, as well as food, music, and more.

The car show will once again be located in uptown Plain City along Main Street. For more info on the car show, visit the UPCO site or the site specifically set up for the car show: Car Show Info

The car show has really blossomed since its start in 2003. At that time it was known as the Plain City Jazz Festival and Classic Car Cruise-In. Joe and I worked with Gary Hay, who owned The Daily Grind Coffee Shop, to get the event off the ground. After the first year, we quickly learned that a jazz festival and a car show didn’t really fit together very well. The car show guys hung around long enough to collect their awards, then they revved their engines and spun away in a whirl of smoke and burnt rubber. The people who stayed or came for the jazz bands were a whole different group of people.

Since Joe and I had never really ever been to a car show, we had to rely quite heavily on the Roberts’ family, especially Theresa Roberts, to explain how car shows worked. The Roberts clan had several older cars that they routinely took around to area shows and they knew the circuit and what you did and did not do. That first year, even though he was under 18, Ory Roberts won the “Pharmacist’s Pick” for his entry, not only because his car was our choice, but because his mom had been such a super help to us.

Several years later when Julie Weaver got involved, the car show really became a smoothly oiled machine. Julie, who was a car show connoisseur, had ideas and ways of doing things that made the show very professional.

The car show started out with the cars lining South Chillicothe Street. From there it went out to the parking lot at Lovejoy’s IGA grocery store and now once again, it is being held under the shadow of the clock.

The second offering for this long, hot weekend is the Dublin Irish Festival. The Festival runs from Friday, August 6 to Sunday, August 8. You can find a complete schedule of events online: Dublin Irish Festival

I have lots of memories of the Dublin Irish Festival. It has grown tremendously since we first started going there in 1996 (or close to it). It used to be a relatively small event, but it is so large now, you have to be bussed in from area parking lots. In 1997, I had back surgery and I still remember walking around the Irish Festival with my parents, Joe, and Bobbie, as well as Joe’s cousins, Larry and Phyllis. I had to wear comfy stretch shorts, because the wound on my back had not healed and I was leaking a mysterious fluid that turned out to be cerebral spinal fluid. Not long after that weekend, I was back in the hospital to have the fluid flow stopped.

One of my favorite things to do at the Dublin Irish Festival is watch the Irish dancers. The Richens/Timm Academy of Irish Dance always features wonderful children and young adult dancers.

So whether you like jalopies or blarney, there’s something for everyone to do around Plain City this weekend.
