Plain City Historical Society’s 2011 Calendars Make Nice Stocking Stuffers!

The Plain City Historical Society’s 2011 “Souvenir” calendars are now available here at the pharmacy for $5 (which, we have to say, we think is a super bargain). The calendar features photos of former Plain City residents who have made a difference in the history of our small town.

For example, November features “The Chapmans” with a photo of “Linnie” Wing Chapman, Linnie’s brother, George Wing of Worthington, Ohio, and George Chapman.

The calendar tells us that “George had a grocery store in the early 1900’s, then became the first Ford Dealer in Plain City. The dealership still exists today but has relocated to Marysville, Ohio. This photo was taken in front of the Chapman home on North Chillicothe in the 1940’s.”

You can also purchase calendars, decks of playing cards ($10), and the “25th Anniversary Cookbook, 1982-2007” ($10–only eight copies remain at the drugstore) at the Plain City Historical Society (and here at Plain City Druggist) located at 111 West Main Street next to Security Bank (formerly Citizens/Farmer’s). The Historical Society is open Tuesdays from 10 am to noon, Thursdays from noon to 3 pm, and Saturdays from 10 am to noon.

The calendars and all of the other gift items produced by the Historical Society come wrapped in memories for former and current Plain City residents. So stop in and get yours now. Not only are you purchasing a “classy” gift for someone on your list, you are also helping to support the work of the Plain City Historical Society.

To find out more, visit the Plain City Historical Society’s web site and become their fan on Facebook (hey, they might deal with history, but they are still “hip” to new trends!).

Say Thanks To the Troops This Christmas with Xerox.

Xerox has set up a web site where you can go and pick out a thank you card to send to a soldier serving in Iraq. You choose the card you like and the sentiment for inside the card and Xerox will print the card and send it. Although you cannot specify who the card goes to, it will be sent to a brave military person.

This neat service is FREE and it takes literally seconds to do (unless you decide to browse through all of the hand made cards).

We don’t say thank you enough and it is especially important to tell our military heros that we support them and are grateful for the sacrifices they make for us. Thank you!

To send your own card, click HERE.

Please let others know about this very simple way to show gratitude for our armed forces.

Christmas Events Around Plain City. Craft and Gift Show at the PAC. Christmas in The Village of Mechanicsburg. Pet Photos with Santa.

There are a few things going on locally this Saturday, December 11, to get you in a festive mood. First off, from 9 am to 2 pm on Saturday, there will be a Craft and Gift Show at Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church’s Parish Activity Center (the PAC) located at 670 West Main Street (behind the fire station). Admission to this event is free. There will be over fifty vendors selling their wares. This would be a good opportunity to do a bit of shopping in one very local and easy-to-access location and mark a few more people off the never ending gift list. There have been signs up all over town about this event, so we hope you plan on attending.

The village of Mechanicsburg will be hosting their own version of our Christmas Under the Clock this Saturday, December 11. Called “Christmas in the Village,” (hey if you don’t have a clock in your town, you can’t exactly have Christmas Under the Clock) this annual event will feature the arrival of Santa (he must have been hiding out at Perry’s all week waiting to head over to Mechanicsburg), a Christmas Parade, and the opportunity to shop at an arts and crafts show. Finally, you can warm up with a bowl of chili at the Fire House Chili Supper. Since Mechanicsburg is only about 20-30 minutes from Plain City, this would be a nice activity close to home to get you ready for the holidays.

Christmas in the Village runs from 10 am to 8pm. For a full list of events for the Christmas celebration in Mechanicsburg, go HERE.

Finally, don’t forget about Photos with Santa at the PetSmart on Sawmill from 11 am to 4 pm on Saturday, December 11. A photo package (you receive a digital photo in a holiday frame) is $9.95 with your PetPerks card. $5 from every package sale goes to Black and Orange Cat Foundation. Santa this year will again be our own Chuck Gaul. So bring your pets and come visit Chuck and Carol and me and Joe as we help situate dogs and cats (and even a snake one year) on Chuck’s lap for a picture. We hope to see you there!

Congratulations to Melissa Skaggs, our iPod Touch Winner!

We want to congratulate Melissa Skaggs who was the winner of the iPod Touch that we were giving away in the drawing during Christmas Under the Clock.

Melissa was very, very excited. You can watch the video of Melissa’s name being drawn from among the hundreds of entries below (just to prove this was legitimate and the contest wasn’t rigged–ha,ha!). Joe even pulled a stranger off the street (well, not really–she was shopping in the pharmacy) to draw the raffle ticket.

Public Service Announcements for the Madison County Depression and Suicide Prevention Coalition Feature Jonathan Alder Students and Our Former Employee, Matt Slota! Vote For Matt’s Video By Viewing It!

Jonathan Alder High School students recently made YouTube videos for the Madison County Depression and Suicide Prevention Coalition’s “Viral Video Contest.” The purpose of the videos was to help inform other teenagers about suicide prevention. Four videos were picked from Jonathan Alder as finalists. The winner will be chosen by the video that receives the most views between Monday, December 6 and Saturday, December 11. There are also videos from London High School and Madison Plains High School.

Teen suicide is a very, very serious subject. This is a unique and creative way to get the message to the teen population which is much more familiar with the world of YouTube and the internet.

We were pleased and proud to see our former employee, Matt Slota, in the video his group produced. Matt was the featured “actor” in the clip and we think he did a very good job. Maybe there is an acting career in his future. You can help Matt’s group win by viewing his video the most by Saturday.

To see Matt in his JAHS Suicide Prevention Video, go HERE.

To see the other three videos that are finalists and were produced by some very talented JAHS teens:

Group 2 Video

Group 3 Video

For the complete rules and to see all the other videos in the competition, go to the Madison County Depression and Suicide Prevention Coalition’s Facebook page.

And, as the videos all relate, if you do know someone who may be contemplating suicide, please call, 1-800-SUICIDE (784-2433).
