Raising Awareness About Men’s Health During Men’s Health Week from June 9-15. By Our June Student Pharmacist, Megan Chaney.

The celebration has begun! June 9th is the start of Men’s Health Week, a time for all men to make their health a higher priority and take the necessary steps to become healthier and happier.

It’s never too late to improve your health, no matter what your age or your current health status. Here are a few easy things you can do every day to improve your health and stay well:

Get Moving: Simply walking at a brisk pace for 2 miles can decrease your risk of conditions such as hypertension or diabetes and could reduce your risk of experiencing a heart attack. Don’t worry, you don’t have to do it all at once. Breaking the walks down into smaller sessions throughout the week is just as beneficial.

Can’t walk 2 miles a week? No fear. Just putting one foot in front of the other and making progress everyday will eventually result in improved health!

Eat Healthy: Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables daily can give you energy and may lower your risk of certain diseases. Fruits and vegetables are a source of many essential vitamins and minerals that can improve your overall health.

It is important to limit foods and drinks high in calories, sugar, salt, and fat.  Food that is high in salt content is often found in fast foods, processed meats, and canned foods. Instead of eating foods like these, try to eat healthy meals and snacks by focusing your diet on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat or fat-free milk products.

Get enough sleep: Lack of sleep can affect your mood and well being. Try to practice good sleep habits such as only associating your bed with sleep (turn off the lights and television when you go to sleep), avoiding stimulants such as caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol too close to bedtime, and establishing a regular, relaxing bedtime routine.

Toss out the Tobacco: Stopping smoking has both immediate and long-term benefits which will lower your risk of heart disease, cancer, and lung disease (just to name a few).

It is also important to avoid secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke inhalation occurs when you inhale smoke from a person who is smoking around you. Secondhand smoke can also cause health problems similar to those experienced by smokers.

Stay on Top of Your Health: See your doctor for regular check-ups and routine screenings. Ask about screening tests for certain diseases and conditions, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes. Certain conditions may not have symptoms, so check-ups help discover issues early or before they can become a problem.

You can be involved in your health, as well, by keeping track of your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood glucose. Bring your numbers with you to your appointments and if they are high or low, your doctor or nurse can explain what they mean and suggest how you can get them to a healthier range.

Kick off Men’s Health Week by completing some of these tips to help men maintain good health and long lives!

We Have Two Students for June. Meet Megan Chaney!

We have two student pharmacists for June. You already met Katy Schafer in a previous posting. Now meet Megan Chaney. Again, please give these two young ladies a warm Plain City welcome when you stop in or talk to them on the phone.

Here is what Megan has to tell us about herself:

Hello! My name is Megan Chaney and I am a fourth year pharmacy student at The Ohio State University, which means I only have one year of school left before becoming a pharmacist. I am very excited to be part of the Plain City Druggist staff for the month of June.

I was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio along with my twin sister, Kary, and my younger sister, Kate. During my undergraduate education, I had my son, Brendan, so if I’m not doing something pharmacy related, my free time is spent enjoying various activities with my son and family such as, going to the zoo, hanging out at the playground, playing board games, going to the movies, and much more.

For my undergraduate education, I attended The Ohio State University where I obtained my Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences. I chose to pursue this degree because I wanted to further my education and attend the school’s pharmacy program in order to earn my Pharm D. I have always been interested in the healthcare field, but my decision to choose this profession specifically came from my 13 years at Kroger, where I have spent the past 8 years in their pharmacy department as both a technician and an intern. My job made it clear that I wanted to pursue a degree in the field of pharmacy.

As a future pharmacist, I hope to continue to work in the community setting. During my time here at Plain City Druggist, I hope to gain knowledge that will allow me to continue to grow as a pharmacy student and see firsthand some of the differences between an independent and chain pharmacy to better prepare me for my future. I look forward to meeting and getting to know all of you throughout the month!

Meet Our June Student Pharmacist, Katy Schafer.

We have two student pharmacists from The Ohio State University this month. With this posting, you’ll meet Katy Schafer. And in a posting later in the week, you’ll meet Megan Chaney. Please make both of these young ladies feel very welcome.

Here is what Katy has to say about herself:

Hi! My name is Katy Schafer. I am a fourth year student pharmacist from The Ohio State University’s College of Pharmacy.

I was born and raised in Marietta, a small town in southeast Ohio. Growing up in a small, country town, I enjoyed being outside as much as possible. Hiking, campfires, and hanging out with my family and friends are some of my favorite things.

During my undergraduate education at Ohio State, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. I knew I loved all my science classes, but that was about it. I took a summer job as a physical therapy aide, where I helped patients recover from surgery and other procedures while they were in the hospital. I discovered that I was more interested in my patients’ medicine than anything else and ended up shadowing the hospital pharmacist where I worked. I loved it!

I went back to school that fall and changed my major to pharmaceutical sciences, and here I am! I hope to pursue a career in community pharmacy when I finish school. I really enjoy building relationships with patients and being their source of information when they need it most.

I look forward to meeting you all this month during my time at Plain City Druggist! Let me know if you have any good hiking spots!
