Thank You to All the Great Fathers Who Help Us at the Pharmacy (and Beyond)!!

Glowbal

We wanted to thank all of our great staff who not only take care of us here at the pharmacy, but also are Super Dads when they aren’t at the drugstore. These extraordinary men are there for their kids and families even as they work hard to do everything they can for our customers and the Plain City community.

Have a wonderful Father’s Day! You definitely deserve a day of relaxation and being treated like a KING!

We Appreciate YOU! Stop By for Customer Appreciation Day on Friday, June 19.

cad-envelope

On Friday, June 19, stop in all day long, so we can sing your praises!

We are so thankful for all of our customers and we want to take the time to let you know just how GREAT you are! Come in on Customer Appreciation Day and win prizes, get discounts, and have lots of fun (as usual)!

As you arrive to shop, one of the staff will place a lovely Hawaiian lei around your neck to make you feel like you’re on vacation and ready to have a good time–at the pharmacy–that’s the way we always want you to feel around us.

When it’s time to check out with your purchases, grab a paper drink umbrella from the giant exotic drink Phoebe will have at the register and find out what discount you’ll receive–5, 10, or even 25 percent off (just so you know–discounts can’t be applied to co-pays–but you can stock up on lots of other goodies out front)!

You can also check out all our staff who will be sporting beach wear–no bikinis (unless Greg gets really wild!), but there will be some cool Hawaiian shirts and a pair or two of flip flops (if Joe relaxes his no open-toed shoes policy for the day!).

We’ll also be honoring all the dads who visit, just in time for Father’s Day, with a free bungee cord! Phoebe also says we can tie the bungee cords around those dads and yank them back in the store if they ever try to go anywhere else!!

So please stop in on June 19, get some goodies, have some fun, and let us say THANK YOU!

Immunization Update–What You Need to Know. By Our June Student Pharmacist, Brittany Roy.

Pharmacists’ roles in health care have been constantly evolving over the past several years and, as a result, a number of different services are being offered to customers in addition to counseling and dispensing medications.

One such service that has gained particular popularity in the community pharmacy setting has been immunizations, including the influenza, shingles, and pneumona vaccinations. Until recently, pharmacists and pharmacy interns (student pharmacists) in Ohio were only permitted to administer a specific list of vaccinations to a limited patient population.

However, the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy made changes to the immunization protocol that expanded the scope and age limits on the types of immunizations that may be administered by pharmacists and pharmacy interns.

As of March 19, 2015, pharmacists and pharmacy interns can now administer:

  • Any immunization recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and any immunization specified in rules adopted by the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy (OSBP) to individuals 13 years old or older without a prescription.
  • Any immunization recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices of the CDC and any immunization specified in rules adopted by the OSBP to individuals between the ages of 7 and 13 if there is a prescription for the immunization.
  • Flu shots to individuals starting at 7 years old without a prescription.

Examples of vaccines added to pharmacists’ protocol include HPV (human papillomavirus) and IPV (inactivated poliovirus). The CDC publishes schedules that include recommendations for certain immunizations, the ages at which they should be administered, and when immunizations should or should not be given because of medical conditions.

You can find patient-friendly handouts of these schedules at the following link: http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/schedules/hcp/index.html.

While discussing immunizations, it is important to note there have also been some changes made to the recommendations for the pneumonia shot, which is part of the recommended immunization schedule and typically given as a multiple-shot series in children and as a revaccination in older adults.

“Pneumovax 23” (also referred to as PPSV23) was the standard vaccine that all patients requiring a penumonia shot would receive. But in 2014, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, Inc. came out with a new pneumonia vaccine called “Prevnar 13” (also referred to as PCV13). The current recommendation is that all patients should receive both vaccines (Pneumovax and Prevnar) in order to complete their pneumonia vaccination. Listed below are the new recommendations. I have also included a flow chart (see above) taken from the CDC that may make it easier to understand. Note that this chart uses the abbreviated names.

  • For people who have never received a pneumonia vaccine and are 65 years or older, they should get the [new] Prevnar 13 vaccine first, then get the Pneumovax 23 vaccine at least 6 – 12 months afterward.
  • For people who previously received Pneumovax 23 at age 65 or older, the person should wait at least one year and then receive the Prevnar 13 vaccine.
  • For people who previously received the Pneumovax 23 vaccine before they were 65 years old but are now 65 years old or greater, they should get the Prevnar 13 vaccine first, wait 6 – 12 months, then get the Pneumovax 23 vaccine.

Vaccinations are a very important part of staying healthy and getting those vaccinations are now easier than ever. Pharmacists are the most accessible health care professionals and their roles are expanding—so take advantage of it! Just ask your pharmacist which vaccines they offer at their location.
