Meet Our Student Pharmacist for October, Andrea Lee.

We are so lucky to have two student pharmacists from The Ohio State University’s College of Pharmacy with us for the entire month of October. Both Andrea and Sarah are fourth year students who will graduate in May 2017 and then go on to practice as pharmacists. In this posting, we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Lee.

Here is what Andrea has to say about herself:

My name is Andrea Lee and I am a PharmD Candidate of 2017 at The Ohio State University’s College of Pharmacy.

I grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. As a musician and an artist, I completed my undergraduate degree in Fine Arts Electronic Media at the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati.

I chose a career in pharmacy after witnessing the aging process of both my parents and having a wish to team up with my sister who is an Internal Hospitalist. The most inspiring moment for me was playing children’s music for oncology patients at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and seeing how healthy it can be for people to feel joy through music and sharing.

I began my initial experience as a pharmacy student by connecting with the Columbus community directly as a Walgreens intern. During my time in pharmacy school, I served as a pharmacy coordinator at the Physicians Care Connection free clinic helping underserved, uninsured patients, as well as immigrants. There, I partnered with the best providers from all regional hospitals to deliver primary care as well as specialties and surgery to patients in dire medical need.

Currently as an intern at Walgreens’ community pharmacies, I deliver the highest quality service and patient care to every patient I meet. In the fall of 2014, I pioneered a novel Medication Therapy Management (MTM) position with the pharmacy manager grossing a $10k improvement in reimbursements overall. I brought medication understanding, resources, and counseling to many patients concerning, not only their daily medications, but short-term medications, immunizations, lifestyle, over-the-counter medicines (OTCs), and nutrition.

In my free time, I love to ride a motorcycle through the many country roads of Ohio and Indiana and teach cooking lessons. I love to get everyone involved with their eating habits. Food is medicine! I spend time helping everyone around me with their medication and health needs even when I’m not in pharmacy.

I am currently an Albert Schweitzer Fellow for Life. With a fellow classmate, we established a student service position at Southeast Mental Health clinic in downtown Columbus. I helped to implement Medication Therapy Management (MTM) services for severely, persistently mentally ill patients in the Columbus area. The results were hundreds of medication interventions alongside immunizations and health education to a needy population.

I have dedicated the majority of my time delivering the best care to the underserved and rural population. After graduation, I plan on completing a two year residency in Critical Care or joining the military as an Army Pharmacist.

My aspirations lead the way to a hope that fosters compassionate relationships between not only between providers and patients, but also among all members of a healthcare team. The result? Outcomes that last and improved quality of life and health for everyone.

I look forward to meeting and getting to know everyone that comes in to the pharmacy. Please stop by and say hi!
