The Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging (COAAA) is Looking for a Union County Representative for their Advisory Council.

The Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging (COAAA) is currently accepting volunteer applications from residents of Union County to fill vacancies on the COAAA Advisory Council. Council members represent the interests of older adults in their specific communities and advise COAAA on services, policies, and programs.

The Council meets eight (8) times a year at 10:30 am on the first Thursday of March, April. May, June, and September, October, November, and December. Meetings are held at the agency’s office on the edge of downtown Columbus with free on-site parking provided.

The deadline for application is December 18, 2013.

Additional information: The Advisory Council functions as a forum for the views of older consumers and fosters a partnership of older adults, community agencies, and local governments. The Council is comprised of 32 members from eight central Ohio counties–Delaware, Fairfield, Fayette, Franklin, Licking, Madison, Pickaway, and Union.

To be eligible, an individual must be a resident of the county with a vacancy and have an interest in the needs and problems of older adults in their communities. Membership is a volunteer position with a three-year term and a limit of two terms.

Council members are invited (but not required) to participate in meetings with legislators, legislative breakfasts, public hearings and focus groups, as well as attend COAAA’s professional workshops at no charge.

Each year, COAAA honors Council Members in the December meeting with an annual recognition luncheon and keynote speaker at a holiday venue.

COAAA is responsible for administering the Older Americans Act and other funds that promote the independence of older adults. The Agency assists communities with the development and coordination of services, as well as advocacy and planning efforts.

For more information or to request an application, please email or call Bonnie Ackerman, Advisory Council Coordinator: backerman@coaaa.org, 614-645-6149 or 1-800-589-7277.

Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging is Looking for a Few Good Seniors!

I recently had an email from Bonnie Ackerman at the Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging (COAAA), which each year chooses senior stars to honor. Bonnie wrote asking for nominations for the 38th Central Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame. The deadline for nominations is extended this year to Friday, March 1, 2013. Each year the Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging (COAAA) recognizes 10 exceptional older adults for their special contributions after reaching the age of 60. Their inspiring stories demonstrate lifelong commitments to causes, organizations, and their communities and set an example for leading lives not defined by age.

Any individual or organization may nominate a resident of Delaware, Fairfield, Fayette, Franklin, Licking, Madison, Pickaway or Union County. Nominees must be 60 years of age or older and a legal resident of Ohio for the past five years or longer. A married couple may be nominated for one award if both have been equally involved in the same activities and both meet the eligibility criteria.

For nomination forms, visit www.coaaa.org and click on Our Agency and Hall of Fame. Or call the Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging at (614) 645-7250 or 1-800-589-7277. You can also go directly to the nomination form by clicking HERE.

The 38th Central Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame ceremony will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, 2013, in Columbus. Inductees will receive personal recognition on stage from county commissioners and local dignitaries, followed by a reception with family and friends.

The Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging’s mission is to plan, coordinate, and advocate for the development and delivery of services for older adults, families and the community. Through leadership, funding and education, the COAAA supports individual choice, independence and dignity. More information is available at 1-800-589-7277 or HERE.

Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging, COAAA, Asks, “Do You Know a Dynamic and Dedicated Senior?”

The Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging, COAAA, is currently seeking nominees for their Central Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame. The next induction ceremony and reception will be held on Wednesday, May 18, in Columbus. Inductees receive a lapel pin, a framed portrait from a professional photographer, and a personal recognition on stage from county commissioners, followed by a catered reception with family and friends.

We have nominated or helped nominate three people from Madison County for the Hall of Fame: Paul Carpenter, our former delivery driver and good friend (2001); Richard “The Captain” Murray, Christmas decorator extraordinaire and husband to Ann, who has worked for the drugstore almost from the beginning (2005); and Mary Mitchell, a lady who can do just about anything she sets her mind to (2008). Mary is featured in the above photo, seated second from the left.

If you know someone who is over the age of 60 and has made significant contributions to their community, COAAA wants to know about them. Any individual or organization may nominate a resident of Delaware, Fairfield, Fayette, Franklin, Licking, Madison, Pickaway, or Union County. The person must be 60 years of age or older and a legal resident of Ohio for the past five years. A married couple can also be nominated if they are both equally involved in the same activities and both meet the eligibility requirements.

You can request a nomination form by contacting Bonnie Ackerman, Hall of Fame Coordinator for COAAA, at 614-645-6149 or 1-800-589-7277.  You can also download an application from the COAAA’s web site HERE.
