Annual and Much Anticipated Shekinah Festival is Friday and Saturday, September 7 and 8.

The Shekinah Festival and Auction will take place on Friday, September 7 and Saturday, September 8. The featured entertainment Friday evening will be Daniel Dye and The Miller Road Band, as well as Andolino, a group of friends who all graduated from Shekinah Christian School. The entertainment will begin at 7:30 pm. Admission is FREE to this concert.

Food booths will open at 6 pm and some will stay open during the concert.

The rest of the Shekinah Festival gets underway at sunrise on Saturday the 8th with hot air balloon rides and breakfast beginning at 7 am. Pancakes, sausage, coffee, and donuts will be some of the mouth watering breakfast items available. As always, there will also be lots of other food, activities for children, and many homemade items for sale. The much anticipated auction gets started at 10 am with the furniture and crafts portion. The hand-quilted quilts will be auctioned at 1 pm. Many of the auction items can be viewed on the web site.

This is the 33rd year for “The Biggest Little Festival in Ohio,” which is the main way Shekinah Christian School raises money to keep their tuition rates affordable. Please stop by and support them. The Shekinah Festival takes place at the Shekinah Christian School located at 10040 Lafayette-Plain City Road, just outside of Plain City.

Covered Bridge Festival, Festifair Arts & Crafts Show, and Shekinah Festival, Saturday, September 10.

This year, Union County will celebrate its covered bridges with the Covered Bridge Festival on Saturday, September 10. There will be guided bus tours, as well as drive-it-yourself tours. Previously, much of the festival was conducted in Marysville, but this year, there will also be lots of things planned right here in Plain City.

One of the biggest changes will be that the guided bus tours will be leaving not only from Marysville, but from the parking lot at Der Dutchman. A ticket booth in the parking lot will sell tickets ($8 for adults, $5 for kids 12 and under) for the tours leaving at 8:45 am, 10:15 am, and 11:45 am. These bus tours will visit bridges in the southeast portion of Union County.

Besides the bus tours, there will also be a Special Covered Bridge Festival postage cancellation stamp at the Plain City Post Office from 9 am to noon; a Covered Bridge Art Sale at the Plain City Historical Society featuring Bob Wilson’s art (Bob Wilson will be attending) from 9 am to 4 pm; kids’ activities, quilting, craft sale, and a spaghetti lunch (11 am to 3 pm) at the Pleasant Valley Senior Center.

Additionally, motorcyclists can participate in a C & A Harley Davidson Motorcycle Ride of the bridges for a $10 registration fee. Registration begins at 10 am with the last bike heading out at 11 am. The registration proceeds will be donated to the Union County Humane Society.

The Festifair Arts & Crafts Show will also take place in Uptown Marysville from 9 am to 4 pm with over 140 crafters selling their artwork. There will also be food and music, including the Black Diamond Bluegrass Band from 10 am to 2 pm.

The Shekinah Festival and Auction will also take place on Friday, September 9 and Saturday, September 10. The featured entertainment Friday evening will be The Mullet Brothers beginning at 7:30 pm. Admission is FREE to this Country Gospel concert. Our friend, Alfred Mullet, is one of The Mullet Brothers and we promise you, he is always entertaining–and a wonderful singer. You will not want to miss this concert.

Food booths will open at 6 pm and some will stay open during The Mullet Brothers concert.

Without his disguise, Alfred tries to blend in to hold the groupies at bay.

There is A Lot Going on September 11.

If you try to do everything that is being offered on Saturday, September 11, you are going to need all day Sunday to recuperate from too much fun!

First off is the Shekinah Festival and Auction, which actually begins Friday, September 10, with a 7:30 pm concert by Jonny Diaz, a Dove Awards nominee for Best New Artist of the year in 2010. Admission is free to the concert and some food stands will be open during the evening.

The rest of the festival gets underway at sunrise on Saturday the 11th with hot air balloon rides and breakfast beginning at 7 am. Pancakes, sausage, coffee, and donuts will be some of the mouth watering breakfast items available. As always, there will also be lots of other food, activities for children, and many homemade items for sale. The much anticipated auction gets started at 10 am with the furniture and crafts portion. Plain City artist, Jim Converse, has donated a hand carved piece featuring bluebirds perching on an axe. The hand-quilted quilts will be auctioned at 1 pm. Many of the auction items, including the Converse bluebirds, can be viewed on the web site.

This is the 31st year for “The Biggest Little Festival in Ohio,” which is the main way Shekinah Christian School raises money to keep their tuition rates affordable. Please stop by and support them.

After you’ve had your hot air balloon ride and stuffed away a few pancakes, you might want to head to the “Game Day 5K Run and Walk” at Glacier Ridge Metro Park (if you can waddle after loading up on goodies at Shekinah). Check-in begins at 8 am with the race beginning at 9 am. This race, which is sponsored by the United Way of Union County and Jerome Village, allows every participant who finishes to enter into a raffle to win a pair of OSU FOOTBALL TICKETS. Additionally, former OSU Quarterback Craig Krenzel, 2002 National Champion, will be available to sign autographs. The walk/run will take place on the paved trails through Glacier Ridge. If you wear an outfit or costume supporting your favorite football team, you might win an award, as well, for “team spirit.” For more information and to register online, go to: United Way of Union County

After sprinting the 5K, you can then meander back to Plain City to participate in many activities associated with the Union County Covered Bridge Festival. Quilt displays, a visit with Tom McNutt, NBC 4 Garden Expert, and much more are on the agenda in Plain City for the day from 9 am to 4 pm. Additionally, in Marysville, you can take a covered bridge bus tour or visit the “FestiFair: Arts, Crafts, and Antiques” in the uptown area. You can also stop by the Marysville Public Library the whole month of September to see their Covered Bridge Exhibit. For more information, call the Union County Convention and Visitors Bureau at 937-642-6279.

As we already mentioned in an older post, The Plain City Historical Society will also be hosting a Perennial Plant Sale on the sidewalk outside the Historical Society (111 West Main Street) from 10 am to 4 pm.

If you are not exhausted by the end of the day, it won’t be from lack of things to do.

The Plain City Historical Society Needs Your Help to Raise Operating Funds!

The Plain City Historical Society needs your help as their operating funds are currently running very low. To help raise money, they are planning a few events, but they need your participation.

On September 11, The Union County Covered Bridge Festival and the Shekinah Festival and Auction will take place in and around Plain City. To take advantage of the people who will be coming through town, the Plain City Historical Society will be hosting a Perennial Plant Sale on the sidewalk outside the Historical Society (111 West Main Street). Historical Society President, Karen Kile Vance, is asking for perennial plant donations for the sale. She suggests that as you split your perennials with Fall approaching, you donate some of the divided plants and flowers for the sale. And, if you don’t know how to divide up your plants, Karen will even send out a “non-professional plant splitter” to help you.

Besides donating plants for the sale, the Plain City Historical Society also needs Plain City residents to buy the plants. The Historical Society will be open from 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday, September 11 to allow you to make your purchases and visit their lovely facility.

There are other ways you can help the Plain City Historical Society, as well. Make sure to attend their monthly meetings, which always fall on the fourth Tuesday of the month and start at 7 pm. The August meeting will be on August 24 at 7 pm and will feature Jack Alston, who is involved with the restoration/renovation projects taking place in downtown/historic Plain City. When you attend the meeting, you can pay your yearly dues (for new or renewing members), as well as make a donation to the “One Dollar Club.” Members participating in this exclusive club, play one dollar per week ($52 per year) to keep the Historical Society “bucking” along.

If you’d just like to make a kind donation to allow the Historical Society to keep history alive and relevant in Plain City, mail a donation to them at P. O. Box 82, Plain City, Ohio 43064.

You can also drop off a donation to them during their hours of operation:

Tuesday, 10 am to Noon

Thursday, Noon to 3 pm

Saturday, 10 am to Noon

The volunteers will be very glad to see you, but even happier if you take them a nice donation.
