We want to wish our Ohio State College of Pharmacy students, Meghan, Colin, Tayler, Jessica, Chris, and Tom a great first day of classes on August 23. Meghan and Chris work at Happy Druggist on Karl Road, while Colin, Tayler, Jessica, and Tom are the friendly faces that greet you in Plain City.

Sadly, with the start of the semester, you probably won’t be seeing our loyal and devoted students in the drugstore except on Saturdays. Tayler is starting his third year of pharmacy school. Jessica and Chris are entering their second years. And Tom, who we are very proud of, is beginning his very first day of pharmacy school at Ohio State on Tuesday!

Our fourth year students, Meghan and Colin, are off doing rotations with other pharmacies until graduation next spring, so this really isn’t a back to school day for them.

We hope all of our students will have a wonderful autumn semester and a super school year in 2016-2017. We are very proud of all of you!

Earlier in the week, we introduced you to our student pharmacist, Kristy Jackson. Today, we’d like you to meet our second student pharmacist for the month of April, Mark Borns. Like Kristy, Mark is a student at The Ohio State University’s College of Pharmacy and will be graduating in May with a doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree before gaining his licensure to practice as a pharmacist.

Please make Mark feel very welcome. Here is what Mark has to say about himself:

My name is Mark Borns and I grew up in a suburb just south of Dayton, OH. I moved to Columbus after high school to begin my studies at The Ohio State University where I completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences. During this time I began working part-time as a Pharmacy Technician at Discount Drug Mart in Grove City, OH.

After deciding I did in fact want to pursue becoming a pharmacist, I was fortunate enough to be accepted into Ohio State’s PharmD program from which I will be graduating in May 2016.

During pharmacy school, I became licensed as a Pharmacy Intern and continued to work part time at Discount Drug Mart. To diversify my experiences, I later began working with Walgreens and then eventually at the Medication Management Program at Ohio State where I provide medication consultation services over the phone to patients nationwide.

In my final year of pharmacy school, that is now almost finished, I have been rotating through various pharmacy practice sites. I spent time at a nuclear pharmacy, various hospitals, at Eli Lilly and Company in Indianapolis, IN., Whitehall Family Health Center, Kroger, and now at Plain City Druggist.

Upon graduation from pharmacy school, I will be moving to Indianapolis where I have accepted a fellowship position with Eli Lilly and Company.

Outside of work and pharmacy related activities, I remain active with my family and friends. I enjoy staying physically active including participating in many outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, playing golf, tennis, and basketball. My friends and I like to watch or attend Ohio State football and basketball games whenever possible. I am very laid back and love to interact with others.

Please feel free to stop by Plain City Druggist sometime while I am here during the month of April so that I can introduce myself.

Meet Our Student Pharmacist for April, Kristy Jackson (and Her Gorgeous Dogs, Mycroft and Sherlock).

We have two pharmacy students for the month of April, Kristy Jackson and Mark Borns. Both of them are from The Ohio State University’s College of Pharmacy and will be graduating this coming May. Please make them feel very welcome while they are with us this month.

First up, we’d like to introduce you to Kristy. Here is what she has to say about herself:

Hello! My name is Kristy Jackson and I am originally from Roaring Spring, Pennsylvania. I grew up in a small farming community and graduated from Central High School where I was a member of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA). In high school, I had the opportunity to compete nationally in FBLA and this is where I became interested in pharmacy.

I then spent four years getting my bachelor’s degree in biological sciences at the University of Pittsburgh. I loved living in Pittsburgh and during my free time, while I was there, I loved exploring all the amazing parts of the city and attending Pitt football games. I was fortunate to get accepted to many pharmacy schools, but knew Ohio State was for me the second I came here. I am now currently in my last month of rotations and will be graduating with my doctor of pharmacy degree very soon!

In my free time I love spending time with my husband, Jason, and our two dogs, Sherlock and Mycroft. In the picture below, Sherlock is the basset hound and Mycroft is the English bulldog. When the dogs aren’t keeping us busy, Jason and I love going to the movies and trying new restaurants.

I had the idea of becoming a pharmacist in high school, but I wasn’t really sure until I was in college. I explored other options while there, but always came back to pharmacy and that’s when I knew it was for me.

I love pharmacy because I am able to apply my love of science and be a part of the medical field. Learning how the body works and how we can change that with medications has always fascinated me.

I really enjoy talking and working with patients and getting to know them better, so I am able to help them with their health and medications. Even though, after pharmacy school I am looking to be more in an administrative position, providing the best care to patients has always been my main focus.

I have been very fortunate to have a wonderful job while in pharmacy school working for Ohio Health Rehabilitation Hospital. It is a small inpatient rehab hospital located in Victorian Village where I have had the opportunity to learn so much more about pharmacy.

My future, as of now, is still a little uncertain since I have applied for a pharmacy residency in healthcare administration. I am hoping to complete a 2-year residency and master degree in administration, so that one day I can be a director of a small hospital pharmacy.

I don’t have much community pharmacy experience, so I am very excited to be on rotation at Plain City Druggist to learn more about community pharmacy in such a unique environment. I look forward to working with all the staff and meeting a lot of patients during the month of April.
