National Handwashing Awareness Week is December 6-12.

Handwashing

One of the easiest things you can do to prevent the spread of germs is washing your hands. At this time of the year as everyone is getting flu shots to prevent the flu, hand washing, along with an annual flu shot, can greatly increase your chances of remaining well.

Dr. Will Sawyer, an infection prevention expert, mans a web site for “Champion Handwashers.” The web site, Henry the Hand, offers important principals of hand awareness to help prevent germs from being passed.

HandWashing

First off, wash your hands when they are dirty, after using the bathroom, and before eating.

Don’t cough or sneeze into your hands. We all know to use our elbows to catch those germs when we sneeze and cough.

Don’t put dirty fingers into your eyes, mouth, or nose.

For more information on National Handwashing Awareness Week, vista the Henry the Hand web site HERE.

For tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on proper hand washing protocol, go HERE.

Please join us this Saturday, December 5, for our Open House and Customer Appreciation evening from 5:30-8 pm during Christmas Under the Clock. We will have lots of food and the small glass bottles of soda that everyone loves.

Christmas Under the Clock is again being sponsored this year by UPCO (Uptown Plain City Organization) and the Village of Plain City.

Participating open house locations will be giving away lots of prizes, gifts, and refreshments. The more open houses you visit, the more chances you have to win. Pick up a map at the first open house you visit to locate all of the other places holding open houses.

Enter the raffle at each open house location to win a $250 Visa Gift Card from UPCO. The drawing for the card will take place at 8 pm at the DNA Building, 340 West Main Street (the old Elementary building). You do not have to be present to win the gift card.

You’ll also have an extra chance to enter the gift card raffle each time you ride one of the shuttle vans running from Lovejoy’s Market to Yoder’s Hardware between 5:30 and 8 pm. Enter one raffle slip per shuttle ride.

Please bring some non-perishable food items or toiletries for the Plain City Food Pantry, 156 West Main Street. Share your blessings this holiday season. If you drop off items for the food pantry at Clip N Curl Family Hair Care, 251 West Main Street, you will receive a $2 coupon for a service or a product.

Here at the drugstore, we will be giving away gift certificates to many local businesses. So stop in and sign up to win!

We’ll be raffling off gift certificates for:

While our Open House kicks off at 5:30 pm, Christmas Under the Clock actually gets under way at 5 pm with the Tree Lighting Ceremony downtown in Bicentennial Park (the Flatiron between Chillicothe and Main Streets). There will be local carolers, the Plain City Community Band, Starlight Twirlers (baton twirlers), and the Jonathan Alder Mixed Chorus at the Tree Lighting. DJ Tim Firlik will also help out with music and sound. The tree will be lit up by the Tree Lighting Pixies, winners of the Christmas Coloring Contest.

From 5:30 to 6:30 pm, the Plain City Community Band will perform in the plaza.

They will be followed by In Harmony Music Studio from 6:30 to 7 pm.

From 7 to 8 pm, the Sharon Mennonite Church Group will warm your spirits.

Once you’ve been dazzled by the tree lighting ceremony and entertainers, head over to the DNA Building, 340 West Main Street (the old Elementary building) for a Christmas Auction beginning at 7 pm. Proceeds from the auction will benefit UPCO (to continue funding the celebration each year). Auction items will be on display beginning at 5:30 pm. Items have been donated by local businesses.

While you wait for the Auction to get started, you can shop at the Crafter’s Only Show in the DNA Building from 5:30-8 pm. Get all of your holiday gift giving done in one stop and pick up some great home-made items.

On your way to see Santa and the Snow Princesses, stop by the Plain City Library, 305 West Main Street, for live music with Classical Sounds and the Friends of the Library’s Book and Novelty Sale. The sale will feature an enormous book sale in the library’s large meeting room, as well as holiday novelties and a selection of gift items made from recycled books including jewelry, bookmarks, buttons, and other unique creations.
