Super Products to Make Life Easier for Nursing Moms.

IMG_3933

As I mentioned in a previous blog about items we now stock for new moms and babies, we also have some really necessary things in stock to make life easier for nursing moms. (Click HERE to see the blog from earlier in the month about new moms’ and babies’ items we carry).

The first item is one that I think is really fashionable and a good item to have while nursing and even after moms stop nursing.

The award winning NuRoo nursing scarf provides an easy way to nurse babies in any situation. Then once mom is finished nursing, the scarf can also just be worn as a lovely fashion item. We have it available in herringbone and gray and white stripes.

If you follow the link, you can watch a short video on how to use the scarf. Scroll down to about midway on the page and watch the video HERE.

One of the companies that supplies a lot of products for nursing moms is Milkies from Fairhaven Health. We carry their Nursing Blend Breastfeeding Supplement as well as their Nipple Nurture Balm which is organic, contains no animal products, and is used to protect and heal chafing while moms are breastfeeding.

Additionally, Milkies produces Milk-Savers which fit into a nursing mom’s bra and allows her to collect milk (up to 2+ ounces of milk) from her non-nursing breast while she is breastfeeding. Once the milk has been saved, the Milkies Milk Trays allow breast milk to be stored in convenient reusable trays that produce a frozen column of milk that fits through any bottle opening.

Finally, Milkies offers “Softies” which are contoured nursing pads made from bamboo, rayon, and microfiber. They are reusable and provide comfort and protection against leaks.

LilyPadz also produces nursing pads to prevent milk leakage, but these are made of silicone and look a bit like giant contacts. You can buy their silicone cleanser and wipes to keep the nursing pads clean and help them last longer.

Another really neat product comes from Milkmakers. Milkmakers lactation cookies can be bought as individual cookies, as a bag of cookies, or as a mix you can make at home. The cookies and bagged mix contain Brewer’s yeast which helps to stimulate the production of breast milk. They also come in a variety of flavors. We have lemon and oatmeal chocolate chip in the store.

When I spoke with Amy and Jodi on the phone, the owners of Total Package Service, they told me that doctors used to just tell new moms to go home and drink a beer if they were having trouble producing milk. Beer used to have the same type of Brewer’s yeast as the lactation cookies now have. But, unfortunately, that is no longer the case, so the cookies are now very necessary (and delicious!).

The final products are from Pariday. They are called TendHer and consist of two items: perineal packs and sleeves along with breast pillows and pillowcases. These pliable, gel filled pillows and pads can be frozen or heated in the microwave to give relief to tender breasts after feedings or for sensitive areas after giving birth. No more sitting on bags of frozen vegetables!!

Please stop by and check out all the items we now carry for nursing moms. If there is anything you’d like for us to carry, please just ask. We can order in many things next day.

Meet Our January Student Pharmacist, Zach Rawn.

Zach Rawn

We’d like to introduce you to our student pharmacist, Zach Rawn, who will be with us for the month of January. Zach is a fourth year pharmacy student from The Ohio State University’s College of Pharmacy. He will be graduating in May and will then take his test to become a pharmacist. Please make sure to welcome Zach and show him how friendly our customers are in Plain City!

Here is what Zach has to say about himself:

Hello! My name is Zach Rawn and I am from Lancaster, Ohio. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, doing everything outdoors, watching movies, playing sports, eating, and taking nice long naps.

I graduated from Bloom Carroll High School where I played baseball and soccer. I then spent four years earning a degree in pre-pharmacy at Ohio State. During my undergraduate education, I really enjoyed going to football games with a large posse of friends. I was even caught on camera wearing a cat costume during a Halloween football game (see photo and video below–look for my whiskers!).

I then was fortunate enough to get accepted into Ohio State’s PharmD class of 2016 where I am currently in my last year of school!

Zach the Cat

I decided to pursue a degree in pre-pharmacy my senior year of high school. My favorite subjects were biology and chemistry. I also knew I wanted to go into a medical field. It was not until my junior year at Ohio State University that I decided pharmacy was the career for me.

As a pharmacist, you are able to learn everything about the body down to the chemical level and how the introduction of other chemicals, drugs, act within it.

I enjoy being the liaison between a patient and their medications. At the end of the day, the opportunity to help others is the driving force behind my passion.

Throughout pharmacy school, I worked as an intern at Target Pharmacy (now CVS) in Easton. I enjoyed my time at Target and am very thankful for all that I have learned there.

I am currently in the application stages in pursuit of a pharmacy residency. I hope to complete a 1-2 year residency, specializing in ambulatory care. Someday, I hope to work in an ambulatory care clinic, managing chronic disease states such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.

I am excited to be at this unique, independent pharmacy in Plain City during the month of January. I look forward to working with the staff and patients of Plain City Druggist!

Check Out All the Great New Mom and Baby Items We Now Stock.

IMG_3987

When Joe and I were at a conference a few years ago, we heard about a great company, Total Package Service, run by two moms, Amy and Jodi, that focused exclusively on really innovative items for new moms and babies. We asked for information and planned to carry some of their products, but things got busy and we never followed through.

Until now.

Just before Christmas, I contacted TPS, Total Package Service, and spoke with both Amy and Jodi about what products they absolutely recommended we try in the pharmacy. Being moms, they had used all of the items they carried and only wanted to recommend things they felt would work best for our patients.

I’m going to divide this blog into two parts. This first blog will focus on some of the neat things for babies and toddlers. Then the second blog will take a look at the products for new and nursing moms.

First up is a company called Ecopiggy. You can see photos of all these products by scrolling down to the end of the blog.

As their name suggests, Ecopiggy offers wonderfully made kids’ items that are organic and eco-friendly.

IMG_3990

Under the bambu brand, Ecopiggy offers baby bowls, forks, and spoons that are made with organic bamboo. They are safe and toxin free–the type of utensils you would want your babies and children using for their food.

The Rhoost brand offers eco-friendly items like brushes and combs and nail clippers that are safe and 100 percent recyclable.

NoseFrida or the “snotsucker” is a doctor recommended nasal aspirator that removes mucus from children’s noses.

The ecopacifier is made from pure rubber from the rubber tree. The pacifier is orthodontic and available for different ages.

Squooshi offers reusable food packs that are chemical free and also prevent tons of packaging from ending up in landfills.

Finally, Piggy Paint offers non-toxic, hypoallergenic nail polish with names like “dragon tears” or “glamour girl.” This polish is even made in the USA!!

IMG_3942

The second company offering baby products is NuRoo.

The NuRoo swaddler comes in a variety of prints and colors. The NuRoo swaddler can be adjusted to fit newborns up to 18″. Then as baby grows, extend the length to size 2, 18″ to 24″, or size 3 which adjusts up to 28″. The swaddler provides a perfect fit at each stage.

Follow this link to see a video on how the NuRoo swaddler works: NuRoo Swaddler

Stop in and check out all the neat new items we have for baby. The next posting will feature items for nursing moms.
